Clenching and Grinding

Whether you realise it or not (mostly likely not) you may be doing uncontrollable damage to your teeth by the way of grinding or clenching. It is so common that you need not be in anyway offended if we suspect that you grind your teeth. Millions of people do this either at night or during the day.

As part of our routine exam we are able to identify whether you are likely to have these habits or not. Acid reflux and poor saliva flow can increase the degree of wear and needs to be addressed as well. Without you knowing we are checking for these patterns in the mouth and you will be informed of this problem and how for your situation we can provide you with prevention of further wear.

There are some known associations for increasing or causing these habits and they are as follows:

  • Stress
  • Sleep breathing disorders
  • Sleep movement disorders
  • Deep pain input (from other parts of the body)
  • Restriction from freedom of lower jaw movement

Grinding and clenching of teeth may lead to the following problems:

  • Shortened, flat or chipped teeth
  • Fractures to teeth, restorations and crowns
  • Headaches & Migraines
  • Jaw and neck pain
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Increased muscle bulk around the face
  • Failure to have deeper more restful sleep

Solutions are individualised but a sample of the solutions may include:

  • Occlusal Splint (we design according to individual needs)
  • Dentures and Restorative Dentistry
  • Orthodontics
  • Referral to have a sleep study and ENT examination
  • Referral to alleviate other sources of pain
