Happy Gas is actually a gas called Nitrous Oxide. In dentistry, nitrous oxide can be inhaled, in combination with oxygen, to help calm the patient down. It is generally considered a good, very safe form of sedation and is also known as relative analgesia, RA, happy gas and laughing gas.

During use, a tingling sensation of the fingers and toes is quickly followed by a feeling of well-being and relaxation. In order to administer happy gas, the patient breathes through a small mask which sits over the nose. It works rapidly, can be used to eliminate or reduce gagging, has no hangover effect being eliminated from the body within 3-5 minutes after the gas supply is stopped and the patient can confidently drive afterwards.
